Memorial Day – originally called “Decoration Day” – unofficially began in 1865 as a way to honor fallen Union soldiers of the Civil War.
Memorial Day has since became an occasion to honor fallen soldiers that made the ultimate sacrifice.
Honor them with the traditions of this special holiday:
-Fly the flag at half-staff from dawn until noon, local time.
-Participate in a national “moment of remembrance” which occurs at 3PM, Washington DC time.
-Place flags on the graves of war veterans.
-Visit or volunteer at your local Kalispell VA hospital.
-Support your local area VFW – and remember, thank a veteran when you’re there!
-Donate your old cellphones to help our military stay in touch with loved ones at home.
-Donate donate calling cards for service members at Operation Uplink.
-Let those who are currently serving know they’re appreciated; Operation USO Care Package
lets you sponsor a gift box containing needed and requested items for a service member overseas.
The Bigfork VFW Post 4042 will host a memorial Day Ceremony at 11 am at the Bigfork Community Cemetery to honor Bigfork Veterans.
Miracle of America Museum - Polson Montana
“Because they served (and serve) we are free” is just one of the many slogans paying tribute to America’s armed forces at the Miracle of America Museum, Polson, Montana.
Gil & Joanne Mangles founded the Miracle of America Museum in 1981 and are still passionate about it today.
This museum houses Montana’s largest tribute to our veterans.
Much more than plaques, bronze statues or granite monuments, the displays create an atmosphere where visitors say they can feel the price of freedom.
